Why is tea better than coffee?
The world’s debates are numerous, ranging from whether there’s life in outer-space to who is the best Batman of the lot. However, none, in our humble opinion is as significant as the controversy regarding tea versus coffee. At face value this debate seems impossible to win; both tea and coffee are great to wake up to, give you a boost of antioxidants and help you power through your day. Tea does have the upper hand though, and after reading this article, it’ll be a no brainer as to why.
1. Coffee’s Calorie-dress up
Coffee has become a dessert in café culture rather than a drink, the fancier the name and the more cream, sugar and fatty substances added the better. We’ve all been victims of the hazelnut mochas, the red velvet lattes and ice coffees which are one-third whipped cream and the fact that nowadays a ‘coffee’ is more colouring and sweetener than actual coffee is disturbing.
On the other hand, tea works well with much healthier accompaniments such as honey, ginger and lemon. Each type of tea has its own unique flavours that are completely natural and don’t have any adverse effects on your health or waistline.
2. The hangover after a coffee ‘high’
While coffee is known to contain more caffeine and makes you feel on cloud 9, this sensation is pitifully short-lived and the coffee high ends in you feeling desperate for more and more of those sugary cups.
On the flip side, a single cup of tea will suffice in boosting your entire day and won’t make you feel lethargic or devoid of energy once its effects wear off. Coffee is also a common cause of insomnia and of course, faithful coffee drinkers will cover their lack of precious sleep with even more coffee!
3. Coffee isn’t the best for your gut
Coffee has greater acid content than tea and is not recommended for people with poor digestion or acid reflux. Tea has less caffeine and is rich in antioxidants that reduce inflammation in the gut and is perfect to aid digestion after a heavy meal. It cannot be said that coffee causes any significant harm but neither does it heal and replenish your body as tea does. Tea according to scientific studies boosts the immune system five times more than coffee and keeps you ultra-hydrated while satisfying your taste-buds.
4. Tea is more eco-friendly
You may be surprised to learn that one cup of coffee consumes eight times as much water as a tea, in addition to the fact that the process of coffee roasting has been found to release toxic pollutants and that coffee grounds cannot be re-used.
5. Tea is the absolute de-stressor
Brewing tea can be akin to a spiritual and cultural experience in the eastern world and the epitome of convenience for busy lifestyles; it doesn’t matter if you plop a tea bag into boiling water or make a ritual out of tea, either was it satisfies and rejuvenates. This blessed quality of tea comes from the fact, that unlike coffee, it slowly releases its limited caffeine that doesn’t give you a ‘high’ but keeps you calm and alert. Tea also consists of amino acids such as Theanine that are known to reduce stress levels, whereas coffee increases the concentration of the stress hormone- cortisol.
These are just a few ways that tea is superior to coffee, and our advice is; stick to the one drink that is both the most effortlessly delicious and healing to bodies and souls.
